Holiday Hairstyles

I'm currently away in Japan on a school music tour and while we're performing we have to have our hair tied back, but none the less it is the holidays so my friends and I have been experimenting with some hairstyles that we think are really cute

The High Pony
A high pony tail is a nice twist or change from the look that most of us where everyday during the term.  It's also very practical for performing in a hot climate, which we are, because it keeps your hair off your shoulders and out of your face.

The Slightly Fancy Plait
Another look often worn during term time the classic plait.  A way to add a bit of a twist to the classic plait is by splitting your hair into the three sections of a plait and then plaiting one section before putting your hair into the braid.

A Cute Bun
For this look I plaited the top section of Jasmine's hair and tied that in place.  I then gathered all the hair together and put it in a bun.  We tied it with a cute scrunchie to add a cute touch.  This look works well on short hair as well as long hair.  Note that Jasmine's hair is shoulder length.

The Side Plait
The side plait is another look that is perfect for performing.  It keeps your hair off your face and neck but it still looks casual and cute.  My one piece of advice for this look is to make sure it sits flat when you're finished and isn't lumpy or bumpy.

The Braid Bun
This is by far the most complex look but you can generally keep it in for a couple of days.
Start by plaiting your hair into many little plaits.  I had 16 but my hair is very thick so you may have between 10 and 18 braids.
After braiding your hair, gather it all into a ponytail in the middle of your head towards your neck.
If you want you can leave it there and it will looks cute, if not keep reading.
Then simply gather all the braids into one hand and twist them into a bun.
Try and keep all the braids flat but if that's not possible you can fix them with bobby pins.

Half up Half down - Braided Style
This hairstyle is perfect on sight seeing days.  It gets the hair off your face but still looks cute, casual and fun.  This looks works great on both long and short hair.

A textured look
When away on holiday sometimes leaving your hair out isn't quite enough but at the same a laid back, casual look is what you want.  For this I would recommend this braided look we tried on Caitlin.

A simple French Braid
For this look I did in Sophia's hair I did a simple French braid but only picked up hair from the bottom of her head. I started in the top left side of her head and it wrapped around to a plait in the bottom right of her head.

Braid Fusion
For this looks that I did on Stephie's heart I started at the top right hand corner of her hair and did a French braid that collected hair on the bottom only.  I never collected hair by her ear and I stopped collecting hair when the braid was half way across her head.
I then plaited that braid and tied it with the elastic.
Then I plaited all her hair into one braid with the existing braid acting as the middle third of Stephie's hair.
I love this look and I think it looks great.

Advice for travelling to Asian Countries

I'm in Japan at the moment and I was in Thailand with my school last year.  I feel that in a lot of western countries we don't  really connect or understand their cultures and therefore sometimes we don't really understand how to act when we're someplace new.

Here are my top tips for traveling to Asian countries.  Written with my friend Stephie who went to both Thailand and Japan with me.

Number One: Embrace and Respect Culture and Food
You are a guest in their country and its a privilege to get to experience that culture.  Try new things and respect the many differences between your culture and their's.  Visit temples and other traditional, heritage sites that you may never get to see again.  Also try new food.  Food in all these countries is amazing so you should take the opportunity to embrace it.

Number Two:  Learn key phrases
When you're travelling you are choosing to visit their culture and that choice vines with the responsibility of learning some of their language.  Greetings, numbers and key phrases will help you and will ear you the respect of the locals.

Number Three:  Research their customs
Learn about what their appropriate dress code is and what they wear to temples.  Like I said in tip one visiting heritage sites is an important part of their culture that you should see but it is important to be respectful about it.

Number Four:  Be open to new experiences
Try new things.  Often you may be visiting somewhere that you'll never get to see again.  Whilst you are there just get on with trying offering things.

For example, whilst in Japan we experienced a traditional tea ceremony.
